"Feeling Down? It Might be Your Fried Food Consumption, Study Suggests"

Fried-Foods

Fried foods, such as French fries, can increase the risk of depression, according to a study conducted in Hangzhou, China. The researchers found that people who frequently eat fried foods, especially potatoes, face a 12% higher risk of anxiety and a 7% higher risk of depression than those who avoid fried foods. Younger people and men were found to be more affected.

The study involved 140,728 participants over 11.3 years. The researchers recorded over 8,000 cases of anxiety and over 12,000 cases of depression among those who consumed fried foods. Individuals who ate French fries were found to have a 2% higher risk of depression compared to those who ate fried white meat.

The study links the increased risk of anxiety and depression to acrylamide. This chemical forms naturally in starchy foods during high-temperature cooking (>120°C). Acrylamide is also present in other foods, such as coffee and toast. The type of food and the type of fat used for frying both affect the health effects of fried foods, according to Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.

The study highlights the importance of limiting the consumption of fried foods, particularly among young people and men, to reduce the risk of depression, anxiety, obesity, and hypertension. The findings were published in the scientific journal PNAS.

In addition to the risks of depression and anxiety, consuming fried foods has been linked to other health issues. Fried foods are a known risk factor for developing obesity and hypertension. These conditions, in turn, can lead to various other health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

It's also worth noting that the way fried foods are prepared can affect their healthfulness. For example, frying foods with unhealthy fats like trans fats can increase the risk of heart disease and other health issues. On the other hand, frying foods with healthier fats like olive oil or canola oil can positively impact health.

It's also important to remember that not all fried foods are equally unhealthy. Some foods, like fried fish or vegetables, maybe more nutritious than others, like French fries or fried chicken. Ultimately, the key is to consume fried foods in moderation and to choose healthier cooking methods whenever possible.
